Position Type: Professional Experience Year Co-op (PEY Co-op: 12-16 months)
Job Title: Scientific Programmer and Analyst for Satellite Monitoring of Air Pollution
Job Location: Toronto
Job Location Type: Hybrid schedule were students are required to come into the office 2 days a week (there are exceptions)
If working on site, can you provide a copy of your COVID-19 safety protocols?: Yes
Number of Positions: 1

End Date: 05/01/2025
Job Function: Research
Job Description: The successful candidate will be joining an internationally recognized satellite remote sensing research group as part of the Air Quality Research Division (AQRD) at Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC). They will be working with remote sensing experts that use satellite remote sensing observations from space agencies such as the Canadian Space Agency (CSA), NASA, and European Space Agency (ESA), to perform fundamental air quality research to meet Canadian goals and objectives. The research performed in the group is similar to what would be performed by your university professors. The successful candidate will also have access to ECCC's impressive supercomputer, which has thousands of CPU for research and analysis. They will be using recently developed leading-edge algorithms for processing satellite remote sensing data for monitoring atmospheric pollution that are of interest to Canadians (e.g. Canada's Criteria Air Contaminants (https://www.ec.gc.ca/air/default.asp?lang=En&n=7C43740B-1). This will include the use and further development of specialized software to enhance our ability compute and analyze emission estimates from a variety of emission sources (e.g. forest fires, oil and gas-related, agriculture). Specific tasks and responsibilities will be tailored to the student's strengths and interests.

The student will also gain a suite of analysis and computer skills that will be very beneficial for a career in engineering, physical science, and computer science. The student will be working in a research setting, and depending on the scientific results achieved has the potential to author or co-author a scientific journal article. Most previous students have co-authored scientific journal articles (e.g. https://www.atmos-chem-phys.net/19/2577/2019/acp-19-2577-2019.html; https://agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1002/2017GL075832; https://acp.copernicus.org/articles/20/2277/2020). The student will also gain valuable communication skills by collaborating with internal and external scientific experts, and by presenting scientific findings.
Job Requirements: The main jobs responsibilities involve using and further developing algorithms (both physical and machine learning) for the acquisition and analysis of satellite measurements for air pollution applications. The student will work in a Linux environment using one or more scientific computer languages (e.g., Python, Matlab, IDL, FORTRAN, etc.).

Requirements:

- Essential skills:
  • The ability to work in a Linux/Unix environment, and the ability to code using a scientific programming language (such as, FORTRAN, IDL/ENVI, GIS Package, Matlab, R, Python, C, C++, etc.).
  • The successful students will also have the abilities to:
    • problem solve
    • interpret scientific data
    • work well with others
    • self-motivated
- Asset skills (skills that would be nice, but not required):
  • Already familiar with scientific programming languages such as Matlab, Python, IDL, FORTRAN, C, R, and graphic packages (e.g. ARC-GIS).
  • Experience with Artificial Intelligence (AI) algorithms (e.g. Random Forest, Neural Networks, Deep Learning, etc)
  • Scientific research experience
