Environment and Climate Change Canada is looking for students to join our department in the role of a Geospatial Developer. Geospatial Developers play key roles in the delivery of geospatial and open data projects that the department undertakes that impact Canadians. We are looking for enthusiastic students who are interested in making an impact to join us. Geospatial Developer duties may include: - Developing software to disseminate real-time data and archive meteorological and hydrological data
You will be expected to work on multiple project teams as well as independent work packages. Students hired into the role are expected to make concrete contributions to the development of geospatial and open data dissemination of weather, climate, water and atmospheric data and services.- Developing business process models, requirements specifications, use cases, relational data models, maintaining controlled vocabularies and detailed data specifications for scientific or corporate data and metadata based on research and engagement of clients and subject matter experts - Documenting existing and proposed business processes, policies, and systems, assessing the impact of proposed changes to the organization and recommending solutions, and validating proposed processes, designs, or applications against requirements - Supporting software developers and others as they work with the models and data - Performing external scans to determine industry standards and best practices You may be assigned to projects in areas such as: - Meteorological and hydrological data management, information systems renewal, analysis and development of data products, the development and adoption of metadata standards
You may also be involved in other major Environment and Climate Change Canada initiatives.
- Geospatial standards analysis and implementation of geospatially-enabled information systems - Information management systems and policy development, systems analysis and development in support of regulatory functions, the development and adoption of standards - Ability to manipulate, analyze and report on large volumes of meteorological and hydrological data |

Job Requirements - Ability to communicate clearly both orally and in writing in English (ability to communicate in French is an asset) - Ability to analyze, evaluate, and troubleshoot open ended issues - Ability to time manage effectively - Ability to work independently - Ability to work in a distributed team environment - Ability to demonstrate initiative - Knowledge of business process modeling, BPMN, and process improvement methodologies - Knowledge of use cases, UML, and XML - Knowledge of REST software architectural styles (e.g. web service APIs) - Knowledge of JSON and GeoJSON - Knowledge of SQL, relational data modeling principles, relational databases, and ER diagramming techniques (strong knowledge on data modeling is a benefit) - Knowledge of Big Data technologies (e.g. Elasticsearch) - Knowledge of iterative software development processes - Willingness to learn to fill knowledge gaps Asset Requirements - Proficiency in any of the following programming languages: Python - Proficiency in any of the following web development languages: JavaScript, HTML, CSS - Proficiency in any of the following web frameworks: jQuery, Vue.js - Experience using Linux commands (bash) or shell (sh) scripts - Experience using Docker - Proficiency in the French language |

Job Position Details - Number of positions to be filled: One (1) or two (2). - Pay: $25.52/hr at 37.5 hours per week. Student rates of pay are set by the Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat: https://www.canada.ca/en/treasury-board-secretariat/services/pay/rates-pay/student-rates-pay.html - The positions are available for 16-month work terms starting May 1, 2024 through August 29, 2025 at our Downsview (Toronto) office. - Hybrid work model: https://www.canada.ca/en/government/publicservice/staffing/common-hybrid-work-model-federal-public-service.html - Students are expected to work 2-3 days per week on site

Preference will be given to Canadian citizens. Preference may be given to students with job-related experience and to students with higher academic standing. Students to whom an offer is made will be required to pass a check for Security Clearance as a condition of employment.
