Job Description: Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO)

The position is normally based out of our Clarkson office in Mississauga.

The successful candidate may be required to use their personal equipment for remote work purposes.
 
Due to the IESO's role in the energy sector, please note that a full security check will be conducted. Job offers will be conditional until you have successfully attained security clearance to work at the IESO.

The Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO) works at the centre of the province's power system, ensuring Ontarians have access to reliable and cost-effective electricity when and where they need it. We operate the province's electricity grid 24/7, design, run and oversee the wholesale electricity markets, and plan and prepare to meet Ontario's electricity needs - now and into the future.

The Engineering Studies department are seeking bright, talented and ambitious Electrical Engineering undergraduate and graduate students who are eager to apply their power system engineering skills.
  • A successful candidate is an effective team player, a creative problem solver, takes initiative, is a strong communicator, and shows a high degree of potential to obtain an excellent grasp of power system operations.
  • The Engineering Student will receive on the job experience, through assignments, to become familiar with methods and practices associated with the work functions specific to various engineering studies and their outcomes.
  • Our engineering teams assess the impact of new connections to the power system as well as identify power system operating limits providing instructions in support of real-time, operations planning and long-term planning.

What you'll do
  • Support power system engineers in determining operating limits and administering the Connection Assessments process;
  • Prepare data and scripts to support power system simulations and analysis;
  • Assist in summarizing simulation results and preparing reports on findings and results;
  • Develop enhanced visualizations and applications to improve processes;
  • Maintain and develop database and simulation tools related to the Connection Assessments process;
  • Perform connection assessments for new and modified connections on Ontario's electricity system;
This job will provide you with the following professional development:
  • Time spent in the Student Development program will count towards PEng Hours.
  • Knowledge of various power system components;
  • Deep understanding of power system operations and planning;
  • Concept of system reliability and power system operating criteria;
  • Development in Tableau for reports and visualizations;
  • Communication skills by working with multiple groups, including the IESO Control Room;
  • Basics of power system studies;
  • Connection Assessments process for Ontario power system;
 
 
Job Requirements: What you need to succeed

Discipline(s) Required: Electrical Engineering – Undergraduate and Graduate Programs

The following knowledge is essential in order to perform the job:
  • Understanding of 3-phase circuit theory, power system network calculations, and basic machine theory. This is normally acquired in Electrical or Computer Engineering disciplines.
  • Demonstrated understanding and experience with programming languages (i.e. SQL, VBA and Python) is an asset.
  • Knowledge of databases, such as Microsoft Access.
  • Experience in technical writing and documentation; proficiency in Microsoft Word's advanced features.
