Job Description: Facilities & Services on the St. George campus is looking for a highly engaged engineering student interested in process redesign and automation through Microsoft Power Platform (PowerApps and Power Automate Flows) and software development.
 
The Process Automation Engineer is a new coop role whose focus is to leverage continuous improvement, user-centered design, institutional automation tools, and software development to transform processes; drive innovations and customer improvements; yield savings and efficiencies across Facilities & Services. They would support in redesigning processes, and design, code, test, and deploy high-quality software solutions.
 
They will work very closely with and learn from both the Business Improvement team and the Systems, Payroll, and Operations Development team. Under the guidance of senior process engineers and senior developers, they will have the opportunity to learn and apply continuous improvement methodologies and cutting-edge technologies to solve real-world problems.
 
They would be responsible for the capture, documentation, and analysis of business and maintenance processes; identification of improvements and automation opportunities; and actively building, testing, and launching automated solutions using Microsoft Power Platform applications and a variety of programming languages.
 
They would also support knowledge transfer through the creation of high value, intuitive, and transferable artefacts to ensure the sustainability, maintainability, and longevity of their solutions.
 
This role will work closely with the development team, senior process engineer, process analyst, special projects officer, and other roles across the department including senior management, field personnel, and administrative staff.

Responsibilities & duties:
  • Conduct interviews and collect data to evaluate internal workflows and business processes.
  • Identify opportunities, gaps, wastes, and areas for efficiencies and automation
  • Create process and information flow diagrams and visualizations to capture detailed processes and aid in problem solving and optimization
  • Perform raw data analysis independently and in a team to identify and analyze opportunities to eliminate waste, reduce costs, and improve quality and customer service
  • Coordinate with stakeholders, conduct meetings and site visits with different staff groups to gather data and information and advise stakeholders on Power Platform opportunities
  • Document user requirement specifications, standard operating procedures, and standardized work
  • Apply user-centered approaches in designing new workflows and applications, such as user stories and usability testing
  • Design, create, build, and test automation solutions using Microsoft Power Platform Applications
  • Research, evaluate, and implement emerging and best practices when working with the Microsoft Power Platform environment
  • Integrate Microsoft Power Platform solutions with other Microsoft technologies to optimize the use of the university’s digital Microsoft ecosystem, information sharing, and reporting
  • Write clean, efficient, and well-documented code following established coding standards
  • Assist in the design and implementation of software features and functionalities
  • Anticipate and mitigate potential technical, data, and user-related issues
  • Perform unit testing and troubleshoot software defects to maintain a robust and reliable codebase
  • Contribute to the documentation of software design, coding, and testing activities
  • Troubleshoot, debug, and develop fixes to developed applications and automated workflows
  • Perform general administration tasks such as organizing documents and files
  • Create and present reports and progress
  • Lead a key business problem solving project as a highlight activity
Job Requirements:
  • Currently pursuing Industrial Engineering, Computer Engineering, or Computer Science degree
  • Excellent logical reasoning, research skills, and critical thinking skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication, organization, and documentation skills
  • Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills to both anticipate and prevent as well as resolve issues
  • Strong ability to work independently or within a cross-functional team
  • Ability to meet strict deadlines and work effectively while balancing multiple demands
  • Knowledge of working with data sources and connectors
  • Knowledge of data transformation and manipulation
  • Experience with Power apps and Power automate (Flow) and familiarity with the Power Platform environment and its components preferred
  • Integration skills with various applications (SharePoint) and services preferred
  • Experience connecting Power Apps and Power Automate to different data sources (e.g., SharePoint, SQL Server, Microsoft 365) preferred
